Breast Cancer Care: Abolition of prescription charges for cancer patients
Comment on the government’s announcements to abolish prescription charges for cancer patients in England from April 1 2009.
Olivia Marks-Woldman, Head of Policy and Campaigns at Breast Cancer Care, said:
“Following a period of sustained campaigning on breast cancer patients’ behalf, Breast Cancer Care is delighted with today’s announcement to abolish prescription charges for cancer patients in England.
“Breast cancer is a very complex illness, so it is particularly encouraging that the exemption certificate covers a wide range of side effects, including lymphoedema and mental health issues.
“Additionally, the fact that the exemption can be extended after the initial five-year period means that patients should not have to pay for cancer prescriptions, regardless of the length of their treatment.
“We would now urge all cancer patients to visit their GP to register for an exemption certificate so they can benefit from this change as soon as it comes in to force on April 1.”
