Breast Cancer Care: Breast cancer incidence is increasing, mortality rates are declining

Comment on a report from the Office of National Statistics which shows that while breast cancer incidence is increasing, mortality rates are declining.

Jackie Harris, Clinical Nurse Specialist at Breast Cancer Care, said:

“This latest data confirms the crucial role that the NHS breast screening service plays in reducing deaths from breast cancer in the UK, and is particularly encouraging following the increase in age range for breast screening announced in the government’s Cancer Reform Strategy.

“Early detection is vital as it can improve treatment options and lead to a more successful outcome, and the breast screening service plays a crucial role in this.

“As well as accepting invitations to regular screening, women of any age must be breast aware throughout their life, by being familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel so that any changes unusual for them can be picked up quickly and reported to their doctor without delay.”
