Statement from Breast Cancer Care
Comment on research from the National Cancer Institute, Maryland, which suggests that the use of daily non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Aspirin, can reduce the risk of developing oestrogen positive breast cancer.
Kath McLachlan, Clinical Nurse Specialist at Breast Cancer Care, said:
“This study examines a variety of factors which may reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. Therefore, it is very difficult to clearly isolate the effects of daily Aspirin consumption and more targeted research would be needed to determine any potential benefits.
“Anyone considering taking a new drug on a regular basis should always consult their GP before doing so.
“Most importantly, it is vital that women of any age remain breast aware throughout their life, by being familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel so that any changes unusual for them can be picked up quickly and reported to their doctor without delay.”
