Statement from Breast Cancer Care on the cost of follow-up care for breast cancer patients

Comment on research by Dr IngaLill Koinberg at Kristianstad University, Sweden, on the cost of follow-up care for breast cancer patients, presented at the European Breast Cancer Conference.

Liz Carroll, Assistant Director at Breast Cancer Care, said:

“This study adds to growing evidence that the majority of breast cancer recurrences are found by patients, and not at a follow up appointment.

“It is clear that new ways of supporting patients need to be investigated, and Breast Cancer Care is set to start a research study with the Yorkshire Cancer Network and Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, working with patients with a low risk of recurrence1.

“While Breast Cancer Care’s and Dr Koinberg’s studies take differing approaches, they are both working towards the common goal of providing more tailored and effective support to women, and men, following treatment for breast cancer.”

Ends

1 – Under the partnership trial, rather than being offered annual appointments with a physician, patients will attend four half-day information sessions where they will be provided with information about their illness, signs and symptoms to look out for and how to access medical help when necessary.

They will also receive information on emotional support available via Breast Cancer Care and other organisations, and this will combine to provide patients with a greater feeling of wellbeing and reassurance on their future health.
