Breast Cancer Care: Comment on the UK Breast Screening Frequency trial

Comment on the UK Breast Screening Frequency trial led by Nottingham City Hospital, UK, presented at the European Breast Cancer Conference in Berlin.

Jane Hatfield, Director of Policy and Campaigns at Breast Cancer Care, said:

“This research confirms that the current three-yearly screening interval is effective and highlights the crucial role the NHS breast screening service plays in reducing deaths from breast cancer.

“We often hear from breast cancer patients who are facing longer intervals between their routine screening appointments than recommended. The challenge now is to ensure that all women across the UK can access their routine screening without delay and that the same high standards of care can be expected, wherever a woman lives.

“As well as accepting invitations to regular breast screening, it is vital that women of any age are breast aware between screening appointments and throughout their life, by being familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel so that any changes can be reported to their doctor without delay.”
