Comment from Breast Cancer Care – obesity and breast cancer

Statement in response to research from Jules Bordet Institute, Brussels, presented to the European Breast Cancer Conference which claims that obese women with breast cancer have negative treatment outcomes.

Kath McLachlan, Clinical Nurse Specialist for Breast Cancer Care, said:

“It is widely accepted that being overweight after the menopause increases the risk of developing breast cancer.

“There is increasing evidence that obesity may have a negative impact on an individual’s treatment outcome. This research adds to that evidence and further studies would be welcome.

“The benefits of a well balanced diet and regular exercise for general health are well established. It is important that all women try to eat a balanced diet, keep within a healthy weight range and remain breast aware throughout life.”
