Peers back ban on smoking with children in cars
The prospect of a ban on smoking with children in cars moved a step closer yesterday after peers voted in support of the move.
While the government remains wary of extending the ban on smoking in public places to private property, the vote shows there is substantial support for more draconian anti-smoking legislation in parliament.
Bernard Ribeiro's private member's bill would impose a £60 fine or a mandatory 'smoking awareness course' for those caught smoking in a car with their children.
It is the second such attempt at a ban, although Labour MP Alex Cunningham's attempt last year came up against considerable opposition from MPs, who were concerned at the civil liberties implications of the move.
