The latest arrest in the Metropolitan police's phone-hacking operation is award-winning reporter James Desborough, according to media reports.

Police announced that a 38-year-old had been arrested by officers from Operation Weeting today "on suspicion of conspiring to unlawfully intercept voicemails contrary to Criminal Law Act".

He was arrested by appointment.

The Guardian reported that the arrest related to Mr Desborough, who was named showbusiness reporter of the year at the 2009 British Press Awards.

The judges singled him out for praise for "uncompromising scoops which mean no celebrity with secrets can sleep easy".

He was promoted to become the News of the World's US editor in 2009 and moved to Los Angeles.

Should he be charged, critics might suggest that similar tactics were potentially used in the United States.
