Andy Coulson has finally left No 10, a week and a half since he announced his resignation.
The former director of communications said a “proper goodbye” to David Cameron yesterday
“Good progress” is being made towards finding his successor, according to Downing Street.
The former director of communications had “finished what he wanted to finish”.
A Downing Street source added: “It was his choice to leave quietly but he said a proper goodbye to the prime minister and those he worked closely with.”
Mr Coulson is by far the most significant scalp to emerge from the ongoing row over phone hacking.
Three separate investigations into the allegations are now being conducted by the Metropolitan police, the Crown Prosecution Service and the News of the World.
