Mike Hancock, the Liberal Democrat MP for Portsmouth south, has been arrested and questioned by police over allegations that he indecently assaulted a female constituent.
The MP, who is also a councillor, was interviewed by police yesterday and released on bail until January 10th. He has not been charged.
Mr Hancock made a statement on his website saying he “attended the police station voluntarily, cooperated fully and answered all questions that were asked”.
“Normal processes now have to be followed by the police, which I entirely understand.
“I intend to carry on normally with my work as a Portsmouth member of parliament and councillor, both in Hampshire and in Westminster, and to represent fully all my constituents as I have always done.”
The MP made no comment on the nature of the allegations against him, but asked that his and his family’s privacy be respected while the legal process continues.
Hampshire police arrested Mr Hancock on suspicion of indecent assault following a complaint from a 36-year old woman from Portsmouth.
Local Conservatives have called for him to step down from his role as councillor until the case is resolved, but Mr Hancock vowed to “carry on normally” both locally and in Westminster.
