Govt confirms 300th Afghan casualty

The 300th British casualty in Afghanistan has been confirmed by the government.
The identity of the marine is being kept secret for 24 hours while next of kin are informed but the individual is understood to have come from 40 Commando Royal Marines, part of Combined Force Sangin.
The marine died in New Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, yesterday as a result of injuries sustained from an explosion in the Sangin District of Helmand Province on the afternoon of June 12th.
A spokesman for 40 Commando, Major Renny Bulmer, said: “It is with great sadness I must inform you that a marine from 40 Commando Royal Marines died on Sunday morning. from wounds he sustained during an explosion in Sangin, Helmand Province.
“Our thoughts are with his immediate family who were with him at the hospital. His courage and sacrifice will not be forgotten. We will remember him.”
Chief of defence staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup, said: “We remember everyone who has given their life in the line of duty and honour the significant progress they have helped to deliver in Afghanistan.
“In theatre today, our people will be more determined than ever to deliver their task of supporting Afghans to build for their own future.”
Military analysts warn that Britain must expect more casualties in the weeks ahead as ‘fighting season’ begin again in the Middle East country.
