Marmite moves against BNP

The BNP face legal action after a party political broadcast used the Marmite brand’s distinctive jar without permission.
A generic image of the Marmite jar appeared in the left-hand corner of the screen at the beginning of the broadcast, opposite the BNP logo on the right-hand-side.
One user commented on a YouTube video of the broadcast: “Thank you to Marmite for lending us your support. You scratch our backs, we don’t forget.”
But a spokesperson for Unilever, the food company which owns Marmite, stated: “We want to make it absolutely clear that Marmite did not give the BNP permission to use a pack shot of our product in their broadcast.
“Neither Marmite nor any other Unilever brand are aligned to any political party.”
Unilever has initiated injunction proceedings against the BNP to remove the Marmite jar from the online broadcast.
The injunction would also “prevent them from using it in the future”, the spokesperson added.
