Govt withdraws doctors’ deportation case

The government has withdrawn its decision to deport Mohammed Asha, the doctor cleared of involvement in the London and Glasgow bomb plots.
The Home Office had maintained that despite the fact that Dr Asha was cleared of conspiracy to murder or cause explosions he still presented a threat to national security and should be sent back to Jordan.
The government claimed that Dr Asha had provided “substantial funds” to Bilal Abdulla, who was sentenced to 32 years in prison for conspiracy to murder after driving a jeep into a terminal building at Glasgow Airport.
However, it would now appear that the case against Dr Asha, which was due to be heard by the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (Siac) in October, has been withdrawn.
Mr Asha is believed to have applied to continue living in the country and continue his work as an NHS neurosurgeon.
A Home Office source said Dr Asha’s application for leave to remain in the UK is still being considered by officials.
“A decision will be made in due course,” the source said.
