Fairness concerns after candidates left off ballots

Up to nine candidates have been “guillotined” off ballot papers ahead of next week’s local council elections in Cornwall.
According to a report in The Cornishman, candidates from several different wards were omitted after a printing error left their names off postal ballots sent to constituents.
While the company in East Sussex has reprinted incorrect ballots the error has caused concern and outrage among those affected and raised questions about the fairness of the election.
“They can’t just say it’s the last batch of 30 that went wrong, how do I know that or how do they know?” said Joan Tanner who was left off the ballot in St. Ives North.
“I am feeling quite upset about this and it’s another mix-up from the old council. Some of the people in my ward have received their postal votes and some have sent them off so how do I know if my name was on their papers or not?”
Jan Ruhrmund, whose name was removed from Penzance Promenade ballots, has demanded to know what the council will do to correct their mistake.
She said: “This makes me concerned and I want to know that the postal vote will be fair and accurate.”
Cornwall council’s elections project manager, Paul Hamill, said despite fears over fairness there was very little that could be done. He said the only reason to delay an election would be if a candidate had died so in this case it would go ahead.
