Would-be MP who hates ‘Welsh-speaking’ steps down

A parliamentary candidate who said he hates “the Welsh-speaking community” has stepped down from his campaign.
Rhys Williams was chosen by Labour to represent Carmarthen East and Dinefwr for Labour, but said he was stepping down for health reasons.
“I have not taken this decision lightly,” he said.
“Recently, my health has not been at its best and I do not feel I could do justice to the rigours of a parliamentary campaign.”
Mr Williams prompted angry responses earlier this year when he argued some Welsh speakers use the language as a method of socially excluding others.
Writing in current affairs magazine Barn, Mr Williams said: “Jonathan Swift said he hates humankind but loves Tom, Dick and Harry.
“In my case, I hate the Welsh-speaking community but love Heledd, Gethin a Glesni.”
