Clegg: There is nothing left
Labour is a spent match that has presided over a decade of rising inequality, led to an economy in tatters and seen British residents tortured with the knowledge of their own government, Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has said.
In his closing speech to the party’s spring conference, Mr Clegg accuses the government of running around.
“For as long as I can remember, there has been a movement for progress in Britain: A movement towards greater freedom, greater equality, greater opportunity,” Mr Clegg is expected to say later today.
“The flame of that movement has burned in the hearts of many men and women. There was a time when it burned for Labour, but that time is over.
“Labour is like a spent match, there’s nothing left.”
According to the Lib Dem leader, Labour’s 12 years in power have led to:
- A rise in inequality
- An economy in ruin
- The country wage an illegal war
- Complicity in torture and rendition
- A poisoned environment
- Repeated invasions of privacy
- A curtailment of basic freedoms
“If you feel let down by Labour, and see that the Conservatives will never be a party of change, turn to the Liberal Democrats,” Mr Clegg is expected to say.
“We carry the torch of progress now, we exist to keep the flame of hope alive. Together we can fight for and win prosperity for all.”
