Boris to face investigation over Green affair
Boris Johnson will be investigated to see if he “potentially corrupted” the investigation into shadow immigration minister Damian Green.
A complaint about Mr Johnson’s behaviour during the police investigation was lodged with the Metropolitan police authority (MPA) and the Greater London Assembly (GLA) by the assembly’s Labour leader Len Duvall.
Neither the MPA nor the GLA are currently confirming the news, but sources close to the London Authority have confirmed to politics.co.uk the investigation will take place, and that there is a possiblity Mr Johnson will lose his position as chair of the MPA.
The complaint was triggered when the mayor admitted talking to Mr Green after his arrest in November.
There are serious questions as to whether Mr Johnson, who is chair of the MPA, should have been in contact with a friend and colleague who is under police investigation.
His statements that the inquiry was unlikely to “yield. a successful prosecution” are thought by some to have potentially corrupted the investigation.
A spokesperson for the Mayor said: “The Mayor is aware that the committee met today – but has not been informed of their decision. He therefore cannot comment.”
The investigation will prove embarrassing to the Tory mayor, who will now be investigated by the organisation which he only just took control over.
In an official statement, an MPA spokesman said: “We can confirm that there was a concurrent meeting of the MPA and GLA assessment sub-committees this morning to consider a complaint made against a member of the authority. The sub-committee will first inform the parties concerned of their decision, after which a decision notice will be made public.”
Mr Green was arrested last year over a series of leaked Home Office documents. He is currently on bail.
