Govt stung by new data loss
Ruth Kelly has admitted that the personal details of three million learner drivers have been lost in the latest data row to engulf the government.
The transport secretary told MPs that in May an American contractor had lost the names, addresses and telephone numbers of anyone who took a driving theory test between September 2004 and April 2007.
But she insisted that financial details such as bank account details and credit card information had not been contained in the missing hard drive.
Earlier today chancellor Alistair Darling updated the House of Commons on the loss of the child benefit database in November, revealing that no evidence of fraud had so far been uncovered.
