Voter registration campaign launched
The government has launched a campaign to get more Londoners voting after statistics revealed that one in five people in the city are not yet registered to vote.
This has serious implications because such a high level of voter under-registration could affect the outcome of next May’s council elections.
Representatives from all three major political parties as well as community leaders met this morning to discuss how best to plan action to tackle the problem.
Elections minister Harriet Harman said today: “Democracy must give everyone an equal say. We are all going to work together to sort this out. Time is tight. The register for the May elections closes in March.
“But we are determined to ensure all Londoners have their democratic rights.”
London mayor Ken Livingstone added: “People have literally fought and died for the right to vote and we should protect this democratic right by using it.”
