Yitzhak Rabin remembered
On the tenth anniversary of the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, foreign secretary Jack Straw paid tribute to the former Israeli prime minister.
Mr Straw described Mr Rabin as a “consummate statesman” who “dedicated his life to the State of Israel, first in the military, then as a politician”.
Mr Rabin was murdered at a Tel Aviv peace rally in 1995 by right-wing activist Yigal Amir, angered at his decision to try and make peace with the Palestinians.
Mr Straw today condemned that murder as “the senseless killing of a man who was devoting his energy to bringing peace to the region”.
He added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family on this anniversary of that tragic day. We must also look to the future as he did.”
The peace process suffered a significant step backwards after Mr Rabin’s death, and is only now beginning to advance forward once again.
