Galloway faces possible prosecution

George Galloway was referred to US authorities last night, after a senate committee decided that there was “probable cause” to believe he had lied to them at a congressional hearing in May.

The senate committee accuses Mr Galloway of profiting from the UN oil-for-food scandal, and says the alleged discovery of a payment of £84,000 in Iraqi oil proceeds to the MP’s estranged wife, Amina Naji Abu Zayyad, shows that he lied to them in May when he denied all allegations.

The Respect MP for Bethnal Green and Bow could now face prosecution in the US for perjury, making false statements or obstructing a congressional hearing.

Mr Galloway has strenuously denied profiting from any oil deal or asking anyone to act on his behalf.
