Prince Charles tells Bush to tackle climate change
Prince Charles last night urged US president George Bush to take a lead on tackling climate change, something he considers the “greatest challenge to face man”.
Speaking at a black-tie dinner hosted by the president, the Prince of Wales spoke fondly of the special relationship between Britain and the US but insisted Mr Bush must take more responsibility for dealing with global warming.
Environmentalists have long criticised the Bush administration for failing to take effective action on climate change – in particular its failure to sign up to emissions-cutting targets.
And last night Prince Charles said: “Many people throughout the world look to the US for a lead on the most crucial issues that face our planet and indeed the lives of our grandchildren.”
He added: “Truly the burden of the world rests on your shoulders.”
Prince Charles and his new wife, Camilla, will attend a series of engagements in Washington over the next two days before heading off to San Francisco at the weekend.
