Chairman of Audit Commission reappointed

The current chairman of the financial watchdog for local government has been reappointed for a second term, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) confirmed today.

James Strachan, who first took up the position of Audit Commission chairman in 2002, will continue for another two years.

Announcing the decision, deputy prime minister John Prescott said: “Under his leadership over the last three years, the Audit Commission has successfully delivered the comprehensive performance assessment for local government and fire & rescue authorities and it is contributing to the improvement of financial management of the NHS.

“James has also pursued a strategic regulation agenda that reflects government’s commitment to rationalising and refocusing inspection.”

Mr Strachan would continue to develop a more “rationalised and co-ordinated approach” to inspection of local government spending, he added.

The Audit Commission is an independent body responsible for ensuring that public money is used economically, efficiently and effectively.
