Two British soldiers killed in Iraq named
The Ministry of Defence has named two British soldiers killed in Iraq on September 5th.
The soldiers were named as 20-year-old Fusilier Donal Anthony Meade, from Plumstead in south-east London, and Fusilier Stephen Robert Manning, 22, from Erith in Kent.
The two soldiers, from the 2nd Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, were killed by a roadside bomb as they travelled in a convoy in southern Iraq. The explosion took place in British-patrolled Basra province, about five miles east of the Shaibah airbase.
Defence secretary John Reid offered his sympathies and condolences to the families of the soldiers. “It is deeply tragic that they have been killed while carrying out their duty,” he said.
The families of the soldiers killed expressed their sorrow at their loss and pride in their sons.
The deaths bring the British military death toll in Iraq to 94 since the start of the war in March 2003.
