Labour general secretary quits
The general secretary for the Labour party has announced his resignation after less than two years in the post.
“I have chosen to step down now, as it is the right time for me to take on a new challenge outside of the party organisation,” Matt Carter said last night.
But he said he remained “totally committed to the party and its continuing success”.
Mr Carter said it had been a “real honour” to help with Labour’s historic third election victory while in the post, which he took up in January 2004.
Labour party chairman Ian McCartney paid tribute to Mr Carter’s contribution, saying: “Matt has done a brilliant job at all levels of the party and will be sorely missed.”
He said Mr Carter had played “a key role in a great team that delivered something that the Labour party has never delivered before – a historic third term”.
