Olympics could ‘forge the way’ in disability access

London’s successful Olympic bid could turn the capital into a “global standard bearer” for disabled access and inclusions, the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) says today.

Following the second reading of the Olympic Bill in the Commons yesterday, the charity is urging the government to spend the money necessary to make the games “truly participatory for everyone”.

The London underground system was the first area that needed improving, and the charity believes the £2 to £3 billion to make it accessible for disabled people would be worth it.

Dame Tann Grey-Thompson, the 11-times Gold-medal winning Paralympics athlete added: “Through the Olympics in 2012, Britain has a chance to show the world that we can set the gold standard for properly accessible facilities where both disabled and non-disabled people can enjoy and share in this great sporting spectacle.”
