£20m package to support terror victims
Chancellor Gordon Brown has announced an extra £20 million to provide support to victims of the July 7th bombings in London and bolster the fight against terrorism.
The Treasury will provide an extra £10 million to the existing structure for victims, the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme. This would aim to cover loss of earnings and other costs for families of the victims.
Home secretary Charles Clarke said the criminal injuries compensation authority would “deal quickly, fairly and compassionately with all applications for compensation”.
The money will come on top of the £1 million government donation to the Relief Charitable Fund set up by London mayor Ken Livingstone and the Red Cross, which was announced yesterday.
Another £10 million will be made available for the Metropolitan police to help combat terrorism.
