Europe to fall silent in memory of terror victims
Britons will be joined by people throughout the European Union today in a two-minute silence to remember the victims of last week’s terror attacks in London.
The mark of respect, which will commence at noon, was organised by the Greater London Authority in collaboration with the Trades Union Congress and religious groups.
A joint declaration by EU home ministers yesterday said they stood “in solidarity” with Londoners. The bombings were “an affront to universal values on which the European Union is based”, a statement from the ministers read.
London mayor Ken Livingstone urged Londoners to come on to the streets at noon to remember the dead, saying: “London will remember all of those who died last Thursday and show its defiance of those who try to change the character of our city through terror.”
There will also be a vigil at 18:00 BST in Trafalgar Square.
