Huge windfarm opens

The largest and most powerful onshore wind farm in the UK has officially opened today in Wales.

Based at Cefn Croes, near Aberystwyth, the £50 million wind farm houses 39 turbines, each up to 328 feet high and has the capacity to meet the electricity demands of some 42,000 households, representing nearly 20 per cent of all onshore wind power in Wales.

Opening the windfarm, economic development minister Andrew Davies said: “Wind power is currently the only viable option to provide the bulk of our renewable energy needs.

“And, with excellent wind resources in Wales, sensitively designed wind farms can play an important role in achieving these objectives.”

Over a 25-year period the new wind farm is expected to prevent the equivalent of four million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, but opponents have already begun describing the initiative as something of a “quick fix”.
