Parliament’s cleaners balloted
Cleaners at the Houses of Parliament are being balloted for strike action by the T&G.
The union has been campaigning since February to improve cleaners’ pay and conditions – most of whom earn just £5 an hour, receive only 12 days a year holiday and have no access to a pension scheme.
It claims that more than 250 MPs and Lords have already pledged their support for the campaign.
The union is writing to all parliamentarians – and will be publishing the responses.
T&G deputy general secretary Jack Dromey said: “Many MPs and Lords share our outrage at the cleaners’ poverty pay, but now we are turning words into action. The Parliamentary authorities need to act to end low pay and deliver respect for the cleaners who service their buildings.”
They are campaigning for £6.70 per hour, 20 days holiday and a company pension scheme.
