Galloway in fire engine protest
George Galloway has said that the removal of a fire engine from Bethnal Green fire station will only happen “over the bodies of those who have come to defend it.”
The Bethnal Green & Bow MP made his comments at a protest outside the fire station.
The London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority is planning to remove one of its two fire engines.
Mr Galloway said its removal would cost lives, since the area had more tower blocks and overcrowded flats than any other borough in London.
His campaign is backed by the London committee of the Fire Brigades’ Union.
Linda Smith FBU regional treasurer said: “When it comes to fires, minutes and seconds are important and can make the difference between life and death, but this has been put aside in the drive to save money.”
