Mardell goes to Europe
In an effort to dispel criticism of its European coverage, the BBC has appointed chief political correspondent Mark Mardell to the new role of European editor.
Earlier this year, the BBC’s coverage of European affairs was sharply criticised by an independent report. It called on the BBC to revitalise its coverage of European affairs and reject stereotyping and oversimplification.
Mr Mardell is a highly experienced political journalist. A regular presenter of the World at One he also appears frequently on the Ten O’clock News and was previously political editor for Newsnight.
Mr Mardell said: “I am delighted to be taking on this new role at a time when the future of the European Union is clearly one of the big news stories.”
