Labour pulls further away from rivals
Labour has amassed a ten-point lead over the Conservatives, according to a new poll.
The NOP poll for The Independent has Labour on 40 per cent, with the Tories on 30 per cent.
The Liberal Democrats are on 21 per cent.
Compared to a similar poll taken on April 19, Labour notched up three percentage points, with the Tories down two and the Lib Dems static.
According to politics.co.uk’s election predictorif the poll was mirrored in actual votes, Labour would have a majority of 144.
The poll also found most Britons (60 per cent) want British troops out of Iraq by the end of this year when the United Nations mandate expires; 19 per cent wanted them to stay on.
Half of Britons said Tony Blair was wrong to go to war, while a third took the contrary view.
On immigration, nearly two thirds of respondents (63 per cent) said the Tory policy of a strict annual quota of immigrants was the right policy.
Yesterday, Tory leader Michael Howard said he was confident his party would win the election on May 5.
The NOP asked 959 voters between last Friday and Sunday.
