Opik launches ‘Reconnect’ campaign
Lembit Opik, the Liberal Democrat spokesman for Wales, has launched a new Lib Dem group called ‘Reconnect’ which aims to reach out to disillusioned electors.
Although membership of group is restricted to Lib Dem members, the group hopes other party supporters will sign up to its forums and newsletters.
The group’s prime target is low turnout and believes that it can reinvigorate voters.
Mr Opik said: “It’s time we politicians started listening to the reasons why people are not voting, instead of patronising non-voters, calling them bad citizens and refusing to accept any responsibility ourselves for losing their confidence.
“Most non-voters are not apathetic and are often socially and politically active in other ways. They just need a decent reason to vote, which the old parties and the dysfunctional political system that protects them cannot provide.”
