Brown – More cash is available for Rover

Chancellor Gordon Brown has confirmed that the Government is prepared to give more money to help rescue MG-Rover.

On a low-key election campaign visit to Edinburgh this morning, Mr Brown stated, “We have already made some money available to help the supply companies and we will announce more in the next few days if it becomes necessary.”

The Chancellor also suggested that the Government might be prepared to launch an inquiry into claims that the heads of the company have made huge sums of money out of the troubled manufacturer.

“There will obviously be inquiries into what has happened in Rover since the deal with BMW”, he said.

The Chancellor went on, however, to stress the successes of British manufacturing under Labour.

However, the Scottish National Party hit out at the Chancellor’s claims, arguing that 100,000 manufacturing jobs have been lost in Scotland since 1997.

Party leader Alex Salmond said: “Gordon Brown has paid a flying visit to Scotland. For all his talk, it is clear that the Chancellor has forgotten the folk back home. Scotland takes second place to his personal ambition. The Chancellor would sell out Scotland if it helped him become Prime Minister of Britain.”

Electioneering has been muted today, during the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles, which has attended by the main party leaders.
