Blair to delay calling of election

Tony Blair is to delay calling the general election after the death of Pope John Paul II.

The Prime Minister had been expected to announce the date of the general election at Buckingham Palace tomorrow.

“The Prime Minister will be attending vespers at Westminster Cathedral,” Downing Street said in a statement.

“In response to speculation we can confirm that he will not be going to Buckingham Palace.”

Despite the delay, it is still possible for the Prime Minister to call an election for May 5, the date widely thought to have been earmarked by Labour for polling.
