Sean Connery to back SNP election campaign
Film legend Sir Sean Connery is to make a “substantial” contribution to the Scottish National Party election campaign.
SNP leader Alex Salmond said Sir Sean had every intention of lending his weight to the general election campaign.
“The world’s most famous Scotsman will be phoning 500,000 voters in Scotland and I think that will have quite an impact on the campaign,” Mr Salmond told Sky TV on Sunday.
Although the message from the Edinburgh-born star will be recorded, “it might even be more memorable than a call from Alex Salmond,” he joked.
On the prospects of the SNP at the Holyrood elections in 2007, Mr Salmond said: “I want to win the 2007 Scottish elections and then I want to see Scotland move on to independence.
“There is a growing realisation that the Labour Party agenda doesn’t really encompass Scotland at all.
“I just think this Labour giant in Scotland is vulnerable to being knocked over, in this election certainly in terms of gains made against them and, in the Scottish elections, I’m absolutely confident – we get progress this election, we beat Labour in 2007.”
