DTI backs world-first particle physics project

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has pledged £9.7 million to support an innovative particle physics project exploring the truth behind the universe.

The world-first experiment looking at neutrino particles, which are formed through muon decay, will bring together leading scientists from five European countries plus Japan, Russia, Switzerland and the US, in researching the physics behind the Big Bang and the universe’s creation.

Science Minister Lord Sainsbury said the project, set to take place at Oxfordshire’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, would be a “demonstration of the UK’s position as a leading base for scientific research and innovation”.

“It is a testament to the UK’s world class science and facilities that leading experimental physicists from across the globe have supported conducting a project of this calibre in the UK.”
