Conservatives slip in new poll
The Labour Party has extended its lead over the Conservatives, according to a new poll.
A YouGov poll for the Telegraph puts Labour three points up since January to 38 per cent.
The Conservatives are down two points to 32 per cent, whilst the Liberal Democrats are down one on 21 per cent.
The findings are sure to come as a relief to the Labour Party after two recent polls saw the Conservatives edging in on Labour.
The ICM survey for The Guardian on Tuesday saw Labour’s lead reduced to three points and a Mori poll for The Financial Times on Wednesday placed Labour only two points ahead.
Today’s YouGov poll put the Tories ahead of Labour on immigration, asylum, and law and order, perhaps reflecting the emphasis of Mr Howard’s early campaigning.
But, voters still had confidence in Labour to manage the economy effectively and believed that Mr Blair would make the best Prime Minister.
Over a third of respondents (35 per cent) said Mr Blair would make the best premier, compared with only a fifth (20 per cent) for Mr Howard.
The pollsters questioned 2,041 adults between February 22 and 24.
