Blair to address IOC

The Prime Minister intends to go to Singapore on the eve of the vote for the 2012 Olympic Games to make the case for London’s bid.

Tony Blair told The Sunday Mirror he would address members of the International Olympic Committee on the day before the secret ballot before returning to the UK.

“We will make arrangements for me to have an input. I’m not sure of the logistics because I’m hosting the G8 summit,” he said.

“But I can assure you I’m going to very active on this.”

It had been thought that Mr Blair would be unable to attend the event as it clashes with the opening of the G8 summit in Gleneagles, Scotland which Mr Blair will chair.

The team of inspectors finished their four-day assessment of the capital yesterday, with many believing that early indications were positive.

Paris is still the bookmakers favourite for the bid, but the past week has seen the odds on a London victory slashed. Mr Blair said it had been a “good week” for the bid.

“The presentations were really strong and there is a confidence, sharpness and excitement about the bid. The IOC is a unique selectorate of about 100 people, and who can tell what they’re going to do?” he added.
