Lib Dems win re-run by-election
Voters in the Derringham ward in west Hull have elected Liberal Democrat Michael Rouse-Deane in a council by-election.
Mr Rouse-Deane won the seat after securing 927 votes, beating an independent into second place.
A total of 2,395 votes were cast for the five candidates.
John Considine of Hull Independents came second with 679 votes.
Labour’s Alan Gardiner came third with 353 votes.
John Cornforth of the United Kingdom Independence Party was pushed into fourth place with 320 votes, with Paul Buckley of the British National Party winning 116 votes.
Voters in the constituency of Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott were asked to cast their ballots for a second time after a High Court challenge was launched by Mr Considine.
The High Court ruled last year’s election of UKIP candidate Mr Cornforth last summer was invalid after a number of voters were sent the wrong ballot papers.
Mr Considine lost the all-postal ballot election by seven votes after six recounts.
