Labour checks electioneering push
Labour has cancelled the launch of its general election campaign as the human tragedy in the Indian Ocean takes precedence over domestic affairs.
The election campaign dubbed “Operation Onslaught” was due to kick into gear this morning with a poster and mailshot initiative, led by Labour’s election chief Alan Milburn and his team.
Labour is bidding for a historic third term of office, with Tony Blair’s leadership and record to be heavily contrasted with the performance of Opposition Leader Michael Howard, a former Conservative Party Home Secretary.
The poster campaigns are to emphasise the strength of the British economy under Mr Blair’s and Chancellor Gordon Brown’s helmsmanship.
A party spokesman said the national and regional events had been cancelled in light of the tragic events in Asia.
Labour will run its campaign under the slogan “Britain is working. Don’t let the Tories wreck it again.”
