Kennedy to star in EastEnders
Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy will be appearing on prime-time soap EastEnders.
Mr Kennedy is set to take part in the Christmas Eve special show. The BBC say that he will play the Ghost of Christmas Future in a one off variety performance with the cast, which will be based around Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
Though Tony Blair has appeared in The Simpsons – where he played himself – it is unusual for politicians to take on such high profile roles
Mr Kennedy has been dubbed “chat show Charlie” by some media commentators for his regular appearances on the television – including a stint hosting Have I Got News For You?
Some though are concerned that with the Liberal Democrats electoral profile rising, such appearances do little to enhance his credibility as a serious politician.
On the other hand, with the Lib Dems keen to appeal to the youth vote in the next general election, appearing in the BBC’s most popular soap might not do his profile any harm at all.
