No “irresponsible pre-election promises” pledges Brown
Gordon Brown is expected to say he will not sacrifice stable economic growth by offering a raft of short-term policies to line the pockets of voters ahead of the next general election.
Speaking at the Labour party conference in Brighton today Mr Brown will say Labour can once again be “trusted” with the economy.
He will tell delegates: “Labour today is the only party trusted with the economy.
“But facing a global recovery that is still uneven and fragile, where oil prices have doubled, we will take no risks with inflationary pay deals.”
With an eye on inflationary pressures, he will say: “From this chancellor and this party no short-termism, no easy options, no irresponsible pre-election promises.”
Mr Brown will underscore Labour’s push for an historic third of office, spelling out his party’s goal of constructing an inclusive national “progressive consensus” drawn not from Westminster but from the will of British people.
