Mandelson stands down

Peter Mandelson formally ceased to be an MP this morning, when he was appointed as Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead.

The historic Crown Office carries no responsibilities, but holders are not permitted to sit as MPs.

The system, frequently referred to as the “taking the Chiltern Hundreds” – in reference to similar disqualifying sinecure – provides a means for MPs to step down, as they are formally not permitted to resign.

Mr Mandelson is to become the European Commissioner for Trade on November 1.
