Gavron appointed Deputy Mayor
Ken Livingstone has appointed Nicky Gavron Deputy Mayor of London.
Ms Gavron will take up the post immediately and will take specific responsibility for the development and implementation of environmental policies.
These include the establishment of a Climate Change Agency for London.
She will also play a “leading role” on children, family and women’s policies.
Ms Gavron is also automatically a member of the Metropolitan Police Authority.
Ken Livingstone said: “I am pleased that I will have a Labour deputy mayor for the full four year term. Nicky Gavron was an important part of my last administration.
“She will continue to play a lead role supporting me on strategic planning and her additional responsibilities for this second term in helping me develop policies on the environment and families are a reflection of Nicky’s commitment to London.”
Ms Gavron acted as Ken Livingstone’s Deputy Mayor during his first term in office.
Then, Ms Gavron was chosen as the Labour Party’s official candidate for London Mayor when Mr Livingstone’s first attempt to rejoin the party in 2002 was rejected.
She then stepped aside from the official candidate’s position in December 2003, paving the way for Mr Livingstone’s return, stating “My absolute priority is to reunite the Labour vote in London.”
