Violence spoils south coast derby
Eight people have been arrested after violence blighted a Premiership derby yesterday.
Several people were injured when rival fans clashed with more than 400 police officers around Portsmouth’s Fratton Park after the team’s 1-0 victory over Southampton.
Cars were damaged during the disturbance and several shop windows were smashed. Four police vehicles were badly damaged.
One man was taken to hospital.
Fans were held for two hours after the match.
Two police dogs were injured in what police described as a “large scale public disorder.”
Chief superintendent Dan Clacher said it was “extremely disappointing” to see “a very small vocal minority” attempting to spoil the game.
“Many offenders have been caught on camera and we will be using all evidence collated as part of a major inquiry into the incidents of violence.
“We will put every effort into identifying and locating those responsible and bringing them to justice,” he added.
