Taiwanese president shot
The president of Taiwan, Chen Shui-bian, has been shot and wounded at a rally the day before elections.
The vice-president, Annette Lu, was also hit in the attacks in the southern city of Tainan.
Mr Chen has urged people to stay calm.
The president’s open-top motorcade came under fire as it came into his home town of Tainan.

“The bullet hit the vice-president in the knee first, then the president,” Wang Hsin-nan, a member of Mr Chen’s Democratic Progressive Party, told local television. He added that Mr Chen sustained a 14 inch wound across the stomach.
It remains unclear how many shots were fired.
They were rushed to hospital, but neither is reported to be in a serious condition.
Taiwan’s presidential elections are set for Saturday. They will proceed unless one of the candidates dies, it has been reported
