Asylum boy dies after dining room “scuffle”
An 11-year-old Somalian asylum seeker died yesterday after a “scuffle” in a school dining hall.
It is thought Suhail Saleh choked to death on a crisp after a fracas with classmates.
The boy was rushed from the Roman Catholic All Saints Secondary School in Barmulloch, Glasgow, to Stobhill Hospital, at 11:35GMT but later died.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death.
A 12-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the incident.
One parent, whose 13-year-old attends the school, said: “My son told me the lad had been eating his lunch when three other boys jumped on him.
“The boy then fell back from his seat and banged his head.
“He was choking as he had some food in his mouth.
“There was chaos and all the kids ran screaming from the lunch room.”
A post-mortem examination was carried last night to establish how the boy died.
Glasgow City Council said the boy fell “ill” in the school dining area during a mid-morning break.
About one in ten of the school’s 909 pupils are either asylum seekers or refugees who have had their asylum claims approved.
All Saints has 67 asylum seeker students and 23 pupils granted refugee status.
