Heightened security fears close UK embassy
The British Embassy in Syria has been closed to the public for a week due to security concerns.
The Foreign Office said the overseas mission in Damascus had been closed to the public from February 10th.
A Foreign Office spokesman said: “The embassy is still operating, it is just not open to the public.”
The spokesman declined to give details on when it would be fully reopened.
The news comes only a day after the Foreign Office warned terrorists were in the final stages of planning an attack in Saudi Arabia.
A number of flights to the kingdom have been cancelled over the last few weeks due to the heightened security risk.
Separately, Saudi police remain in the hunt for a suspected car bomb in Riyadh, reportedly housed in a GMC Suburban 4×4 vehicle.
The Saudi interior ministry has offered a reward of £1 million for information leading to its safe impounding.
Yesterday, Abdullah al-Shahrood, the charge d’affaires at the Saudi embassy in London, told the BBC the situation in the kingdom was “stable.”
“We have British MPs visiting Saudi Arabia these days and the situation is stable.
“Good intelligence we are getting will improve the situation but terrorism is an international problem.”
